Diving the Fish Rock Cave

Fish Rock is a rocky pinnacle just a short boat ride offshore from South West Rocks, New South Wales. From the surface, the rocks barely rise above the water and look rather unremarkable. Underwater, however, Fish Rock is a very different world and is considered one of Australia's outstanding dive sites.

The highlight is a spectacular 125-metre-long underwater cave that passes through the rock. The two entrances are at approximately 12 and 24 metres, allowing suitably trained divers to enter from one side and emerge from the other. The cave is home to a remarkable variety of marine life, but its most famous inhabitants are sand tiger sharks, known in Australia as Grey Nurse Sharks (Carcharias taurus).

The sharks can often be found resting or slowly cruising around the cave and the surrounding rocky reefs. Wobbegongs, sea turtles, and large schools of fish add to the scenery. The combination of the dark cave, the rugged rock formations, and the sharks makes this a particularly memorable dive.

Several dive operators in South West Rocks offer trips to Fish Rock, including the South West Rocks Dive Centre. The boat ride is relatively short, but conditions can change quickly. During the Australian winter, rough seas can make the journey uncomfortable and occasionally prevent boats from leaving the harbour. Diving the cave itself also requires appropriate training and equipment, and conditions inside the cave can vary with tides, swell, and visibility.

South West Rocks is a small coastal town with a good selection of accommodation. It can become quite busy during the Australian summer holidays, but outside the peak season it is a pleasant base for exploring the area. In addition to diving, the region offers beautiful beaches, spectacular coastal cliffs, and viewpoints overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Whales and dolphins can sometimes be seen offshore, while kangaroos are common in the parks and natural areas around town.

Fish Rock is therefore worth visiting even on a non-diving day—but for divers, the combination of the cave and its resident Grey Nurse Sharks is the main attraction.
