Jardines de la Reina, Cuba - Mangrove Forest

March 2010

Mangrove forests play a vital role for Cuba’s ecosystem. They shield the coastline from erosion by storms and waves, they filtrate the water and increase the water quality, and they provide sheltered nursery grounds for many species. The cayos of the Jardines de la Reina are covered by dense mangrove forests and shallow channels between. The outer sides (south) facing the open see show many kilometers of unspoiled beaches, inhabited by crocodiles, Hutias, and Iguanas.

The small gallery here shows pictures taken when snorkeling in the channels and some topside pictures to give an impression of the rich wildlife of this area.
